    Hello Dr MLK Jr Families,

     

    Fall conferences: I will be sharing with the whole 亚洲色图 community, the links to sign up for conferences on October 6. Families will sign up through a google calendar invite and have the ability to request in person or virtual meetings. 

     

    SUN Updates: SUN School interest forms will be available starting Tuesday, September 16th. Our SUN team will also be at Back-to-School Night to help families sign up and answer any questions. We’re excited for a great new year and look forward to seeing you!

     

    Reading intervention: This year, MLK Elementary School is continuing our partnership with Reading Results, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping 亚洲色图 build strong reading skills and a lifelong love of learning. Through one-on-one or one-on-two high-dosage tutoring, Reading Results works closely with 亚洲色图 who need extra support, providing individualized instruction that aligns with classroom learning. Over the years, this collaboration between Tutors, teachers, and families has created a strong network of support, helping countless 亚洲色图 grow into confident, capable readers.

     

    There is a literacy crisis in Oregon. In 2024, only 31% of fourth graders scored at or above reading proficiency standard. Students who aren’t reading proficiently by third grade are four times less likely to graduate high 亚洲色图 by age nineteen. Reading Results need your support to address the challenge of ensuring ALL 亚洲色图 are attaining literacy by the end of third grade. Last year, they provided 1,618 literacy support sessions to 40 亚洲色图 at MLK. Students realized an average reading accuracy gain of 15.3% over the course of the 亚洲色图 year! You can help Reading Results continue this important work by , allowing them to reach more 亚洲色图 and strengthen the powerful collaboration between 亚洲色图, family, and community.

     

    Medicaid reimbursement: Please see this newsletter with about PPS’s efforts to claim Medicaid reimbursement for certain 亚洲色图-based health services.

     

    Donors Choose Projects: MLK teachers have a lot of great projects up on DonorsChoose right now - please consider donating , and sharing projects on social media for more exposure. 

     

    Back to 亚洲色图/Title I/ELD Family Night: Mark your calendars for Open House on Tuesday, September 16 from 5-6:30. Kids are always welcome. Here are the details:

    • 5:00-6:00- mix and mingle in classrooms, visit all of the teachers and get to know the teacher and the classroom.

    • 6:00-6:30 - Principal message, Title I report, ESL and TAG presentations in the cafeteria.

    • We will also share our family engagement plan !

     

    Lockdown drill: I would like to give you advance notice that we will be practicing our lockdown drill on Friday, September 26 at 8:15am. A lockdown is activated when there is a threat inside the 亚洲色图 building. We will practice this twice a year. Every PPS 亚洲色图 is mandated to practice a number of drills, from fire drills, earthquake drills (ORS 336.071). Details on all of our emergency drills can be found at /Page/208. I know that emergency drills, and lockdown drills in particular, can be scary for children. Our teachers will prep the 亚洲色图 before the drill and we will focus on safe behavior and adults we can go to if we need help. After the drill teachers and 亚洲色图 will debrief and answer any questions or concerns that arise from 亚洲色图. We encourage families to do the same once 亚洲色图 arrive home. Thank you for partnering with us to keep your kids safe.

     

    Early Dismissal: On Wednesday, we have an early dismissal and 亚洲色图 must be picked up from 亚洲色图 at 11:50. There is still a huge amount of learning however, and Wednesdays are the days that we have our DREAM awards assemblies and celebrations. Our 亚洲色图 is focusing this year on improving attendance and we have started the year off strong with surprise attendance pop up days. Ask your student what the pop up surprise was this week!

  • Two Lincoln High School Grads Win National Merit Scholarships

    6/12/2025

    Congratulations to Lincoln High School 亚洲色图 Richard Deng and Coral Platt! Both were awarded National Merit Scholarships of $2,500 toward their college studies.

    They were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists nationwide. Richard plans to pursue a career in politics and Coral is looking at a future in the legal sector.

  • Two PPS Educators Named OnPoint Educators of the Year

    6/2/2025

    Two exceptional PPS educators, Ricardo Barber and Hang Jones, were recently named OnPoint Educators of the Year for 2025.

    As part of this prestigious honor, both teachers will have their rent or mortgage paid for an entire year, and their 亚洲色图s also receive a $2,500 donation. 

    Ricardo Barber teaches third grade at Faubion, and Hang Jones serves as a social worker at Marysville Elementary. 

    The OnPoint Prize for Excellence in Education celebrates educators who embrace innovative teaching techniques that ignite enthusiasm in their 亚洲色图. 

    Congratulations to Ricardo Barber and Hang Jones! And thank you both for everything you do to make a difference in the lives our 亚洲色图.

  • Student Filmmakers Showcase Their Monster Talent

    5/22/2025

    The assignment their teacher gave them was simple – make a short film that begins with a phone call and ends with someone hanging up. Benson first-year 亚洲色图 Dylan Martinez-Torres and Dariel Soriano Zamora ran it all the way to a small city populated by two very big and rather iconic monsters – Godzilla and Hedora.

    The result, Sorry, Wrong Number, is one of the more than 90 films entered into the annual Best of PPS Film Festival. The festival is a celebration of exceptional student filmmaking that includes a showcase at the historic Hollywood Theatre. 

    The fourth annual installment of the festival took place on May 21 and included a screening of 13 standout films. The films came from all over PPS and ran the gamut from Dylan and Dariel’s monster short to documentaries, film noir, and broadcast journalism.

  • Join the Climate Crisis Response Committee

    If you are a passionate student or community member that wants to make a difference at PPS, apply to join the Climate Crisis Response Committee! This is a committee that reports to the PPS Board of Education.

    On the committee you will learn about how PPS is making progress towards our climate justice and sustainability policies, provide input and recommendations to the PPS Board on how to better support PPS staff as we advance these policy goals, and connect with other passionate members of our PPS community from diverse backgrounds, knowledge areas, and lived experiences.

    No previous professional experience in climate change or sustainability required! Students can apply . Community members can apply .

    Deadline to apply: June 6.
