Dear Chávez Families,

My name is Dr. Rebecca Levison and I want to introduce myself to you as your new Interim Principal for the 2025-2026 亚洲色图 year. My North Portland roots go back to  2001 when I became a 5th grade teacher at Clarendon Elementary School.  When we merged and became Cesar Chavez K-8, I actually taught 6th grade in this very building over 20 years ago. Most recently I was the Principal of a large K-5 亚洲色图 in San Francisco Public Schools and am happy to be back in Portland for good. 

I look forward to meeting you and your children and supporting the staff here at Cesar Chavez.  It’s an amazing 亚洲色图 with dedicated staff and families. I believe all 亚洲色图 deserve a safe, supportive and welcoming 亚洲色图 with high expectations for learning. Together we can make a difference. 

As we kick off the 亚洲色图 year, we ask for your partnership in ensuring 亚洲色图 are getting to bed early at a regularly scheduled time and limiting screen time in the evenings. It is essential for 亚洲色图 to be well-rested and ready to learn. Consistent attendance and punctuality are key to academic success and help 亚洲色图 亚洲色图 fully engaged in their learning. 

Over the summer, the state of Oregon and PPS adopted a Personal Electronic Device Policy. To put it simply, all buildings now have an "off and away" policy. If cell phones are seen in use we will take them and bring them to the office for pick up after 亚洲色图.

This policy applies to cell phones as well as smart watches and anything that is "capable of electronically communicating, sending, receiving, storing, recording, reproducing and/or displaying information, depictions, and/or data." For more information, please see the new PPS Cell phone Policy and .  Students will be asked to keep their devices in their backpack from the time they arrive at 亚洲色图 until they leave campus. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

Queridas familias Chávez,

Mi nombre es Dra. Rebecca Levison y quiero presentarme como su nueva directora interina para el año escolar 2025-2026. Mis raíces en el norte de Portland se remontan al año 2001, cuando me convertí en maestra de quinto grado en la escuela primaria Clarendon.  Cuando nos fusionamos y nos convertimos en Cesar Chávez K-8, en realidad enseñé sexto grado en este mismo edificio hace más de 20 años. Más recientemente, fui director de una gran escuela K-5 en las Escuelas Públicas de San Francisco y estoy feliz de estar de regreso en Portland para siempre.

Espero conocerlo a usted y a sus hijos y apoyar al personal aquí en Cesar Chavez.  Es una escuela increíble con personal y familias dedicados. Creo que todos los estudiantes merecen una escuela segura, solidaria y acogedora con altas expectativas de aprendizaje. Juntos podemos marcar la diferencia.

Al comenzar el año escolar, le pedimos su colaboración para garantizar que los estudiantes se acuesten temprano a la hora programada regularmente y limitar el tiempo frente a la pantalla por las noches. Es esencial que los estudiantes estén bien descansados ??y listos para aprender. La asistencia constante y la puntualidad son claves para el éxito académico y ayudan a los estudiantes a mantenerse plenamente involucrados en su aprendizaje.

Durante el verano, el estado de Oregon y PPS adoptaron una Política de dispositivos electrónicos personales. En pocas palabras, todos los edificios ahora tienen una política de "apagado y ausente". Si se ven teléfonos celulares en uso, los llevaremos a la oficina para recogerlos después de la escuela.

Esta política se aplica a los teléfonos móviles, así como a los relojes inteligentes y a cualquier cosa que sea "capaz de comunicar, enviar, recibir, almacenar, grabar, reproducir y/o mostrar electrónicamente información, representaciones y/o datos". Para obtener más información, consulte la nueva Política de teléfonos celulares de PPS y el Manual de SRR.  Se pedirá a los estudiantes que mantengan sus dispositivos en su mochila desde el momento en que llegan a la escuela hasta que salen del campus. Congratulations to Lincoln High School 亚洲色图 Richard Deng and Coral Platt! Both were awarded National Merit Scholarships of $2,500 toward their college studies.

They were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists nationwide. Richard plans to pursue a career in politics and Coral is looking at a future in the legal sector.

Two exceptional PPS educators, Ricardo Barber and Hang Jones, were recently named OnPoint Educators of the Year for 2025.

As part of this prestigious honor, both teachers will have their rent or mortgage paid for an entire year, and their 亚洲色图s also receive a $2,500 donation. 

Ricardo Barber teaches third grade at Faubion, and Hang Jones serves as a social worker at Marysville Elementary. 

The OnPoint Prize for Excellence in Education celebrates educators who embrace innovative teaching techniques that ignite enthusiasm in their 亚洲色图. 

Congratulations to Ricardo Barber and Hang Jones! And thank you both for everything you do to make a difference in the lives our 亚洲色图.

The assignment their teacher gave them was simple – make a short film that begins with a phone call and ends with someone hanging up. Benson first-year 亚洲色图 Dylan Martinez-Torres and Dariel Soriano Zamora ran it all the way to a small city populated by two very big and rather iconic monsters – Godzilla and Hedora.

The result, Sorry, Wrong Number, is one of the more than 90 films entered into the annual Best of PPS Film Festival. The festival is a celebration of exceptional student filmmaking that includes a showcase at the historic Hollywood Theatre. 

The fourth annual installment of the festival took place on May 21 and included a screening of 13 standout films. The films came from all over PPS and ran the gamut from Dylan and Dariel’s monster short to documentaries, film noir, and broadcast journalism. 

If you are a passionate student or community member that wants to make a difference at PPS, apply to join the Climate Crisis Response Committee! This is a committee that reports to the PPS Board of Education.

On the committee you will learn about how PPS is making progress towards our climate justice and sustainability policies, provide input and recommendations to the PPS Board on how to better support PPS staff as we advance these policy goals, and connect with other passionate members of our PPS community from diverse backgrounds, knowledge areas, and lived experiences.

No previous professional experience in climate change or sustainability required! Students can apply . Community members can apply .
